ITV’S Tonight programme reveals that nearly 80% of people have experienced lower back pain. It’s one of the most pressing health issues facing our nation – costing the economy billions of pounds every year in medical treatment, and missed work days.

With our lifestyles becoming increasingly sedentary we all need to be moving more as our spines love to move. Tonight state that sitting down is as deadly as smoking.

In the past, we have been informed that the best way to treat back pain was plenty of rest and painkillers. However now advice has changed and we are advised to ,keep moving.

“We need to find ways of introducing more movement throughout our day not just in short intensive bursts like we do with exercise.”


Modern technology has enabled us to carry out everyday chores and activities with as little effort as possible, says Vybarr. We should all be aiming to walk 10,000 steps a day to strengthen our backs.

If you are suffering from back pain, the NHS recommends the following:

  • Keep moving – you’re likely to recover faster
  • Exercise – our backs are stronger than we realise!
  • Take breaks – so you’ve aren’t sitting down for long periods
  • Try to relax – stress and anxiety go hand in hand with back pain
  • And see your GP if you’re still in pain after 6 to 8 weeks

Keep Dancing welcomes people living with back pain as we happily make adaptations to movements to prevent further aggravation. We know that each person has a different body and ability and we believe that everyone is a dance.

Keep Dancing teaches many different dance styles to maintain interest, improve coordination and improve balance and develop memory. The nature of the classes are very friendly and encourage people to meet new people and have FUN!

However, we’re not just about Keep Dancing. Our belief that everyone is dancer is extended to working with older frail adults in care homes, dementia cafes and hospitals. Our dance workshops are use an inclusive approach so that they are accessible for all no matter how limited an individual’s movement may be. We whole heartened believe that any opportunity to dance is an opportunity to gently move, evoke memories and bring laughter and happiness into everyone’s lives.
