Wish you were here

Fancy reminiscing on summer trips and wonderful memories?

We love sharing our dancers wish you were here pictures of them striking a pose in front of a famous landmark or special place that has meant something to them this summer.

We’d love to see your photos! They will be shared on social media and in our monthly newsletter, providing a wonderful way for our new dancers to get to know our thriving community!

Here’s a photo of Susan Lawson outside of the Smallest House in Great Britain in Conwy Wales

The tiny home was built in the 16th century and remained in use until 1900, when the tenant was a 6-foot-3-inch (1.91 m) fisherman named Robert Jones. The house has a floor area of 3.05 by 1.8 m (10.0 by 5.9 ft) and is painted red. It stands near the Conwy Castle walls. The ground floor is devoted to the living area with room for coal and an open fire, and a water tap tucked behind the stairs. The upstairs holds the cramped bedroom. A Welsh lady in traditional clothing stands outside when the house is open and will tell visitors about the history of the house.[1]Visitors are unable to go upstairs to the first floor, due to structural instability, but can view it from the step ladder.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 2024

October is Breast Cancer awareness which is a international health campaign held every October to help promote screening and prevention of the disease. The month supports people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, educates people about breast cancer risk factors, encourages women to go for regular breast cancer screenings and fundraises for breast cancer research.

Breast cancer is more common in women than men. Around 55,500 women and around 370 men are diagnosed in the UK each year.

1 in 7 women in the UK develop breast cancer during their lifetime. It is more common in older women.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Around 55,900 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK. That is more than 150 people a day.

For more information, support and helpful organisations visit the Cancer Research Website here

This month during our tickled pink themed October Tea Dance our dancers took part in Xpress-Yourself Tickled Pink Quiz, why not give it a go on your own or with the special ladies in your life. Have some fun and spread awareness by accessing the quiz here .

Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month

November is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month in the UK.

Our Cool down song this month is Somewhere Only We know – It was written by Keane piano player Tim Rice-Oxley, who told the UK paper The Mirror: “It’s about being able to draw strength from a place or experience you’ve shared with someone. I think it’s an idea a lot of people can relate to.”

We don’t have many men who attend our classes but for most of us we have special men in our lives, husbands, brothers, uncles, sons, friends.

Sutton Coldfield NNS Over 50’s Festival

October saw Xpress-Yourself take part in the Sutton Coldfield NNS over 50s festival! The Fifty + Festival was a fortnight of health and wellbeing activities during the 7th-20th of October 2024.

Xpress-Yourself delivered an additional two taster session dance classes over the festival on Friday 12th October and Friday 18th October. The sessions were a great chance to try something new or for our regular dancers to get an extra class in the week as well as meeting new people and having fun.

A huge thank you to Sutton NNS for funding our additional taster sessions.

Here’s what one of our wonderful dancers had to say about the event:

‘I am happy I found the experience an enjoyable one. Laura was our teacher. Her style was relaxed, structured and well received by all who attended.

The session had 6 participants of varying ages and fitness levels but Laura made sure all ur needs (use of a chair and the availability of water) were accommodated for. The sessions started with a gentle warm up, followed by instruction for 2 short dance routines and ended with a gentle cooldown. The music Laura used was lovely and very appropriate for the dance routines. Laura provided a range of options for any technical dance steps so a level of performance could be achieved. This was appreciated.

The offer of a cup of tea or coffee with a biscuit at the end was a nice touch too. The opportunity to chat and form friendships is important and was appreciated.

I felt it was a very positive wellness experience. Thank you’

Take a look at some pictures of our great stall and our amazing dancers taking part and enjoying a wonderful dance class!

Resources for Carers

Here at Xpress-Yourself Dance CIC, we support carers. In addition to our carer classes on offer, we are also happy to provide resources to help support carers and hopefully make their responsibilities a little easier – we are more than happy to help!

We have been compiling resources for unpaid carers and putting them into one handy blog post to make navigating help easier. We have our Carer Support Birmingham blog and our Carer Support Sandwell blog which we will continue to update these with resources, so be sure to keep checking in!

Here are some examples of useful resources you can access (most of them are FREE):

Emergency support for carers in Sandwell – This website provides useful information about how to plan for an emergency, including links to valuable resources. There are also details on the free Carer’s Emergency Card Scheme.

Walsall Carer’s Hub – A hub of important information and resources. You can register for free with the service here.

Bridgit Care – If you want advice, resources or support, you can create your own free self-help plans, as well as access carer support information and speak to advisors.

Birmingham Buddhist Centre – Holding multiple FREE events and getaways for carers (see below), this is a great opportunity to relax, unwind, and meet other carers. For the carers breaks, you must be registered with Birmingham Carer’s Hub.

Want to practise this month’s dances at home? Here are the songs that you have been dancing to this month. You can listen to the playlist here.

Keep Dancing Timetable

Places for all classes are limited so booking in advance is essential.  Classes will always go on sale a week in advance on a Monday at 10am.

See our timetable below for all of our Keep Dancing classes now running or about to launch!

Paying by Cheque

We are now incurring bank charges for paying in cheques, meaning that sadly we have to look at passing on the costs. At the same time we are aware that for some people paying by cheque is their only option and we would not want this to be too much of an inconvenience or prohibit anyone from joining our classes, so we have looked at how this extra cost can be shared. Therefore, if you pay for a class each week by cheque, the cost will be £5.80. However if you pay for more than one class at a time by cheque, we will pay the charge so that classes remain at £5.50 each. On the back of the cheque please make a note of which class dates you are paying for, as the bookings will be non-transferable or refundable, in line with all other bookings. Also, if paying by cheque, please make it payable to Xpress-Yourself Dance CIC and send it to Xpress-Yourself headquarters at 75 Wheatsheaf Road, Oldbury, B69 1SN. We are not able to accept cheques at class, thank you for your understanding.

Volunteers needed!

We are looking to recruit volunteers to support our ongoing work. If you or someone you know is looking to make a difference in 2024 then perhaps you, or they may consider volunteering for us. You will be given training opportunities to further develop your skills.

Keep Dancing Host – maybe you know someone who would like the benefits of Keep Dancing (meeting new people, feeling a sense of community but unable to join in with the dancing). We would like to introduce our Volunteer Keep Dancing Hosts who will be responsible for welcoming people to our Keep Dancing classes, introducing them to other members, offering extra support to anyone who may need it, taking photographs of the session, and capturing any golden moments within our sessions. Our Keep Dancing classes run weekly.

Tea Dance Host – For our new project launching in 2024 in Sutton Coldfield we will need support running our tea dances, making teas and coffees, helping to set up the room and decorate the space and clearing up after the event. Our tea dances will be happening once a month.

Admin/marketing support– If you have experience in admin and marketing, and perhaps you love a spreadsheet and would like to utilise your skills on a voluntary basis. We would love to hear from you.

To find out more information about our Volunteering positions please email Faye at hello@xpress-yourself.co.uk, or check out our Volunteers Wanted blog.
