Keep Dancing Marston Green

“Keep Dancing is an absolute joy in every way…physically and emotionally. It is a wonderful way to exercise and improve our coordination and posture, as well as giving us the chance to meet others and benefit from social interactions.”

At Xpress-Yourself Dance CIC we know how important dance can be for your physical, mental and social wellbeing, especially as we get older. We also believe that starting a new hobby can be an amazing (but sometimes scary) experience for your health, and the new year is the perfect time to do this!

New Years resolutions can sometimes take a toll on our brain, as it can be tricky keeping up with pressures and rules to successfully complete your resolutions. So when you come to make the decision on your New Years resolution for 2025, why not think about Dancing? 💃

Lovely community spirit at Keep Dancing Sutton Coldfield

Dancing for older adults is extremely beneficial for your physical health especially during the winter months when it may be more difficult to get outside due to weather conditions and less light during the day, therefore the new year is the perfect time to begin. Dancing regularly can improve mobility, balance, functional skills due to keeping active and warm.

In a study conducted with people with an average age of 75 years old showed that engaging in dance enabled them to be more mobile with less joint and muscle aches and pains. Dr Sarah Astill, Associate Professor in Motor Control in Leeds’ School of Biomedical Sciences led the University research team. She said: “Physical inactivity is recognised as one of the main risk factors for non-infectious diseases and mortality’. To read more about this study click here

Dancing is extremely important to boost your mental wellbeing, by connecting to joyful experiences through music, movement and meeting new people which can reduces anxiety and depression amongst older adults. Dancing can allow you to feel euphoric whilst reminiscing on past experiences of dancing which can enable nostalgia and happiness. The dose of serotonin that dancing releases can reduce anxiety and stress levels. Participating in dance classes can increase life satisfaction and allow you to have a more positive outlook on life.

“The classes are really fun and enjoyable. You can forget all your problems for an hour.”
