Settle down for a musical read about the Monkees
Our lovely dancer Tina from Keep Dancing Garretts Green and Keep Dancing Sheldon is a huge fan of the band the Monkees.
The Monkees were a pop-rock band formed in the United States in the mid-1960s, created as a fictional group for a television series inspired by the Beatles. The band consisted of Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork. Their TV show, also titled The Monkees, debuted in 1966 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, helping transform the group into real-life pop stars. Their hit songs include “I’m a Believer,” “Last Train to Clarksville,” and “Daydream Believer”.
We really wanted to share her story of her dedicated fan following. Here’s what she had to say:
“I have been a Monkees fan since I was 12 years old when I watched the Monkees series on TV . The Monkees were four young lads who answered an advert for the making of the TV Series .They were Davy Jones, born in Manchester, Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith .
I still have the Monkees LP which I had for my 13th birthday , plus another Monkees LP .Pisces Aquarius Capricorn & Jones Ltd.They are both well worn and the covers a bit tatty.
Neil Diamond wrote four songs for the band including ‘A Little Bit Me and a Little Bit You’ and I’m a Believer which was a Monkees number one hit in 1967.
I used to be a member of the Monkees Fan club and in 1996 my sister and I went to the old Pebble Mill Studios to see Davy Jones being interviewed. I took my Monkees Annual that I had as a 13 years old teenager and he autographed it. I still have it .I also have a photo of me and my sister taken with Davy Jones .
We also went to a couple of Monkees concerts together .After my sister passed away I went to see them at the Indoor Arena on my own as I couldn’t miss a chance to see them.
Davy Jones was my late sisters favourite and Micky Dolenz is my favourite from the band and sadly the only one of the Monkees still alive.
Davy Jones was in Coronation Street and played Ena Sharples grandson. Davy passed away on the actual day I retired from work in 2012.
I still have my 2 Monkees LPs ,3 Monkee Annuals and a Circus Boy Annual .
Micky Dolenz was Circus Boy .He also produce the 1980’s series ‘Metal Mickey’.
Mike Nesmith mother invented Liquid paper correction fluid which we know as Tippex or White Out.”
We would like to extend a huge thank you to Tina for sharing her story and the beautiful picture from 1996. I am sure you will all agree it is wonderful to read about such dedication and passion she has for her favourite band.
Let us know in the comments who your favourite band is and how long you’ve been following them! We would love to share some more of our amazing dancers stories in future blogs!
