Dancing makes us smile, laugh and connect, find out how dancing is magic

This month, Keep Dancing classes are cooling down to “It’s Kind of Magic” – not only because it’s a great song by Queen, but because it perfectly captures how magical dance can feel.

After the Christmas break, many people returning to their first class this week said how good it felt to move again. The joy of music, movement, and being back together reminded everyone just how powerful and uplifting dance really is.

When we are dancing, we activate the body-mind connection. The body–mind connection in dance refers to the interplay between physical movement and mental processes, creating a holistic experience that integrates awareness, emotion, and expression.

Dancers have physical awareness through understanding posture, alignment and spatial awareness as well as mental engagement through

Where can we practice the body-mind connection in our daily lives?

  1. Breathing Techniques – using intentional breathing techniques, such as box breathing, can help regulate emotions and reconnecting the mind to body sensations
  2. Body Check-Ins – Pausing during your day to reflect on where you have tension in your body. Using small stretches and movements to release tension can increase your somatic awareness.
  3. Improvisation with feeling – choose an emotion and improvise dance moves with your chosen emotion as the intention without worrying what it looks like, this can help inner emotions connect to physical movement.

Dance releases feel-good chemicals by combining physical movement, music, emotional expression and social connection.

The release of endorphins when you dance can help to reduce stress and pain, create feelings of happiness and euphoria and relax the body after movement. Dopamine is released when people do something pleasurable and rewarding. This is by the music activating the brain, learning choreography feels rewarding and self-expression creates satisfaction.

Serotonin is released when we dance, regulating mood and emotional stability. Creating rhythmic, repetitive movement soothes the nervous system creating emotional presence and mindfulness. Dance also releases Oxytocin which creates social bonding within the group, boosting social connection.

Dance engages breath, rhythm, and movement together, shifting the body out of “stress mode” and into a more relaxed, regulated state. This balance allows feel‑good chemicals to circulate more effectively throughout the body.

Dance brings us into a flow state, which is the mental space where concentration, movement, and enjoyment blend into one. Time seems to disappear, and we feel fully present in what we’re doing. In a world filled with distractions, dance gives our minds permission to switch off and simply be.

You don’t need to be a trained dancer to experience the benefits. Dance can be woven into daily life in simple, joyful ways:

  • Put on your favourite song and move for two minutes
  • Add a short dance break during study or work
  • Join a local class or follow online tutorials
  • Dance while cooking, cleaning, or getting ready
  • Explore different styles to see what resonates

There’s no right or wrong way to dance—only movement that feels good.

Next time you hear a song you love—let yourself move. Your body and mind will thank you.
