Xpress-Yourself Dance’s first inclusive adult dance Edgbaston , Let’s Dance will launch in May 2023. This will be a dance class suitable for adults aged 18 years to 49 years old who live with a learning disability. The class will run at Edgbaston Community Centre, Edgbaston, Birmingham. Inclusive Adult Dance Class Edgbaston will launch in Edgbaston, with the hope of launching in other wards in Birmingham.

One of Xpress-Yourself Dance’s aims is to get more people dancing and making dance opportunities accessible for vulnerable people as we strongly believe that everyone can dance. When you come along to Let’s Dance (Inclusive Adult Dance Class Edgbaston ) you recieve the warmest of welcomes by trained professional community dance artists Faye O’Connor and Helen Mason, both of whom have vast experience in supporting and dancing with adults with learning disabilities. Both Faye and Helen are friendly, professional and patient and absolutely love encouraging people to share their joy for dancing.

Xpress-Yourself Dance CIC was founded by Faye O’Connor in 2013 because of her love for dance and ensuring dance could touch the lives of everyone no matter what their dance ability or experience. The Let’s Dance dance sessions will be fun and upbeat taking note of your musical interests and different styles of dance you would like to explore. They will also be structured so great for those who like routine and familiarity as their will be a beginning, middle and end to every session. After a few sessions you will start to become familiar with other participants and dance artists and you will always be encouraged to actively participate.

Over the last 10 years Xpress-Yourself Dance have developed our Keep Dancing programme which has supported people over 50 to Keep Dancing across the West Midlands. Xpress-Yourself Dance have always welcomed everyone into their dance classes and adapted to cater for different needs. Xpress-Yourself Dance have also worked in different health and social care settings supporting older frailer adults on their dancing journey.

Xpress-Yourself Dance CIC are absolutely delighted to be launching Let’s Dance, Inclusive Adult Dance Class Edgbaston to further our offer of dancing in the community. Let’s Dance, will be our first Inclusive Adult Dance Class Edgbaston and Xpress-Yourself Dance will be brining the energy. As this will be the first Let’s Dance (Inclusive Adult Dance Class Edgbaston ) to run Xpress-Yourself Dance will be monitoring and evaluating the class constantly to ensure that they build sustainability and development around their model.

The most important thing for Xpress-Yourself Dance is that you enjoy the opportunity to dance, you can take yourself as seriously as you would like and imagine you are dancing on Strictly Come Dancing for the hour or come along for the joy of movement and the laughs (of which their are always plenty!) So whether you are a complete beginner or have danced before Let’s Dance is the perfect dance class for you.

Frequently asked questions for Let’s Dance dance sessions – Inclusive Adult Dance Class Edgbaston 

Do I need to bring my carer along?

Yes. If you need the support of a carer to support you with transport, communication, personal care, medication needs, behaviour management you will need to bring your carer along with you to the session.

How much is the session?

The sessions initially is FREE, thanks to support and generous funding from The heart of England Foundation and Edgbaston NNS.

Do I have to book for Let’s Dance?

Yes. Places are limited and so you will have to book each week if you are planning on coming to the Let’s Dance session. Please book by email to hello@xpress-yourself.co.uk If you book a place and can no longer make it, please do let us know so we can offer the place to somebody else.

Do I have to attend Let’s Dance every week?

No. You are welcome to book onto sessions when you can attend, please be reminded that places are limited and will not be reserved. The more sessions you are able to attend the more benefits you will reap.

What should I bring with me?

Please bring with you a drink and wear suitable clothing to move and dance. If you have any emergency medication please bring this with you for your carer to administer. Oh and most of important of all please do bring your biggest smile!

Do I need dance experience to attend Let’s Dance?

No. If you are a complete beginner or you have danced before you will be most welcome to attend the session.

If a Let’s Dance session is cancelled how I will be informed?

If a session is cancelled due to staff illness or problems with the venue you will be informed by email hours before the session.

What day will Let’s Dance run?

Let’s Dance will run on a Wednesday 1pm-2pm starting Wednesday 3rd May. The sessions will run in blocks of 10 so the first dates will be: 3rd May, 10th May, 17th May, 24th May, 7th June, 14th June, 21st June, 28th June, 5th July, 19th July, 26th July.

Let’s Dance , (Inclusive Adult Dance Class Edgbaston ) has been able to launch thanks to the success of Xpress-Yourself Dance CIC Dance running a similar project at Stoney Lane Day Centre, West Bromwich . This weekly dance project has supported 11 people with learning disabilities to dance and achieve their full dancing potential and improve their health and wellbeing though dance. This success was why Xpress-Yourself Dance have been encouraged and supported to start Let’s Dance. A huge thanks to Edgbaston NNS in their continued support.
