Dementia and Carer Friendly Tea Dance – Quinton, Birmingham

Dementia

Dementia Friendly Tea Dance in Quinton, Birmingham: A Safe Social Space for Older Adults and Carers.

Together in Time Tea Dance is funded by the Heart of England Community Foundation and Edgbaston NNS Together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our last Together in Time Tea Dance on Monday 30th March. It was a wonderful afternoon full of dancing, connecting and sharing the joy of movement.

Our dementia friendly tea dance offers the perfect opportunity to share smiles, create lasting memories, and celebrate the joy of dancing together. Whether you love to dance or simply enjoy socializing over tea, everyone is welcome to experience this joyful, community-focused event.

Following the dancing, we brought everyone together for a fun, ‘around the world’ themed quiz, inspired by the music and styles we had just enjoyed on the dance floor. Throughout this afternoon, participants experienced a variety of dances, including a traditional Greek dance, an energetic Irish jig, lively merengue from the Dominican Republic, vibrant Bollywood from India and a classic English Waltz.

One of the highlights was the Britannia Two-Step, where dancers came together in trios, creating a wonderful sense of connection and teamwork.

For our next tea dance, we’ll be refining the format to make it even more inclusive – helping to better support and encourage more people living with dementia to feel confident, comfortable and inspired to join in the fun.

We were also delighted to see some people join in the event in a seated capacity, which we actively encourage. Taking part while seated ensures that everyone, regardless of mobility and confidence, can enjoy the music, feel included, and be part of the shared experience.

Here’s what our dancers had to say about the afternoon:

‘Happy and Full of life! Fun Afternoon!’

‘Very good’

‘Lovely atmosphere, good exercise both mentally and physically. Thank you for a lovely afternoon’

‘Another wonderful afternoon – happy dancing and great company’

After dancing, 15 out of 18 dancers reported feeling better than when they arrived, 12 out of 18 said they felt happy after the Tea Dance. Other words to describe feelings after the tea dance were: relaxed, alive, joyful, less-stressed, jolly, elated, full of life.
