The Tango originated in the Rio de la Plata region, which is the border between Argentina and Uruguay, in the 19th Century. The main origin was in the working-class areas of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, blending the diverse cultures of African and European descent within the neighbourhoods. African rhythms from candombe ceremonies (religious dance ceremony), the Cuban habanera, Argentine milonga, and European dances such as the polka and mazurka all contributed to the development of tango.
It’s popularity soared in the early 20th century, spreading from the suburbs to the city centers and eventually to Europe and North America. Paris was the first European city to embrace the dance style, followed by London, Berlin, and New York.
The influence of iconic musicians like Carlos Gardel and Astor Piazzolla helped to shape tango music during its Golden Age in the 1930s. The rise of large orchestras produced rich, complex, and emotionally expressive music that became the soundtrack of the era. Tango permeated Argentine society, embraced by all generations and social classes. It was played everywhere—from dance halls and cafés to cinemas and radio broadcasts—and became a central part of Argentine identity and entertainment. Over time, it evolved into a refined, dramatic, and improvisational dance celebrated worldwide.
