It is time to take a trip to Brazil as we delve into the benefits of the Samba

Samba originated in Brazil during the late 19th century, emerging from Afro-Brazilian communities in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro as a fusion of West African rhythms, Portuguese marches, and local folk traditions brought by enslaved Africans.
Samba took shape in Rio’s Afro-Brazilian neighbourhoods around the early 1900s, incorporating influences like maxixe, Cuban habanera, and polka. In 1916 the recording of “Pelo Telefone” by Donga became the first recognised samba. Take a listen here, what do you think of the first samba track – does it get your feet stamping and hips swaying?
By the 1920s-1930s, Carnival parades with large crowds of over 300 drummers playing in 2/4 time at fast tempos! Dancers performed synchronised steps to big percussion sections, fixing the image of samba as a high-energy, fast-travelling street dance. This “samba no pé” solo style, with rapid weight changes and continuous bounce, became the iconic Rio Carnival dance we know today.
Now let’s take a look into the benefits of dancing the Samba for your health…
- Increasing Muscle Mass –
Samba’s fast footwork and constant weight shifts heavily engage the calves, quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteal muscles, which can lead to increased strength and visible tone over time. The posture and hip action of the dance engage the core and lower back muscles. Increased muscle mass in older adults improves bone density and lowers the risk of osteoporosis and fractures if you have a fall.
2. Improves Blood Pressure Control
Dancing the Samba makes the heart pump more efficiently so it can deliver the same amount of blood with less effort, which reduces resting blood pressure. Dancing samba can help improve blood pressure as it is a form of aerobic exercise that strengthens the heart, improves blood vessel function, and lowers stress levels.
A recent meta-analysis of dance-based exercise in individuals with high blood pressure found average reductions of approximately 7–8 mmHg in systolic and about 3 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure, comparable to those of many other aerobic exercise programs. Taking dance classes, especially samba, is a great form of aerobic exercise for reducing blood pressure.
3. Boosts Body Confidence
Through movements that highlight control, strength, and expressive posture makes people feel more capable in their bodies and more visible in a positive way.
Here are the certain moves or postures of the Samba that boost body confidence:
- Open chest and lifted posture – feel taller and more present, confident and less frail.
- Samba bounce – makes dancers feel more stable and powerful on their feet, which increases physical self‑esteem.
- Turns and Spins – give dancers a sense of being on display in a positive, celebratory way when being performed in a group
4. Creating a Community to Boost Mood
Dancing the Samba in a group class builds connections and belonging, which boosts mood by reducing anxiety and depression. Rhythmic synchronisation and shared cultural expression create bonds that reduce isolation and build mutual support. Multiple Samba sessions build communities that counter isolation.
5. Higher Levels of Endurance
Samba’s continuous footwork and hip movements mimic brisk walking or cycling, boosting cardiovascular endurance and lung capacity without putting stress on the joints. This enables older adults to maintain rhythm and posture longer while improving abilities for activities like walking or climbing stairs. This supports better overall stamina.
