5 Effective Benefits of the Cha Cha Cha for your Physical and Mental Health

Cha Cha Cha

This month in our Keep Dancing classes, we have been learning the Cha Cha Cha. Let’s take a look at how we are benefiting from this style of dance…

The Cha Cha Cha is a lively Latin dance that evolved from Cuban music traditions. The history blends African rhythms, Spanish influences and ballroom steps.

The origins of the Cha Cha Cha came from Cuba in the 1940s and 1950s, and was rooted in the dazon and the mamba. Enrique Jorrin was a composer and violinist who was the main man behind the creation of the Cha Cha Cha. Jorrín experimented with simplifying the syncopated rhythms of mambo so dancers could follow more easily. He introduced a distinct rhythm that dancers interpreted as a triple step—“cha-cha-cha”—named after the shuffling sound of dancers’ feet on the floor.

Take a listen to Jorrin’s most famous piece of music here Enrique Jorrin – La Engañadora (Perlas Cubanas)

Fun Fact: The name Cha Cha Cha comes from the sound of the dancers’ feet sliding across the floor during the triple step!

Benefits of the Cha Cha Cha

  1. Improves Attention – The Cha Cha Cha has a specific rhythm to follow, so staying on the beat requires full attention. The tracking of the music, timing and the steps sharpens concentration.

2. Lowers Cortisol – Cortisol is the body’s stress hormone, and the Cha Cha Cha’s movement, music, focus and social connection in a dance group work together to calm the body’s nervous system. Keeping cortisol level balanced is important for older adults as it helps clear thinking, emotional stability and physical strength.

3. Strengthen Bones – the Cha Cha Cha includes weight-bearing movements like shifting and stepping, which have a light impact with the floor. When the body does these movements, the brain signals to the body to maintain bone density, especially in areas prone to Osteoporosis. Stronger bones also reduces risk of injury.

4. Builds Confidence – The Cha Cha Cha gives the dancer a chance to add their own personality, encouraging self-expression. In addition to this, each small success when learning, repeating and perfecting the steps gives you self-belief in your capability.

5. Improved Posture and Core Engagement- As the Cha Cha Cha is danced with an upright chest and aligned spine, your core and back muscles will stay engaged to hold the posture and protect your body. Hip rotation in the dance engages your obliques and builds rotational strength.

There are so many benefits to dancing the Cha Cha Cha. With consistency and repetition, you will begin to see the benefits in your physical, mental and social health.
