Are you ready to twist, stretch and bend in our Street Dance classes?
Street Dance originated in the 1960s and 1970s in African-American and Latino groups in major cities like New York and Los Angeles. Funk styles were prominent in Los Angeles such as popping (tensing and relaxing muscles) and locking (exaggerated acrobatic moves with pauses). Whereas in New York break dancing was the most popular style of street dancing, originating in the Bronx influenced by martial arts and gymnastics.
One of the first times you may have recognised the dance style street was in the 1984 film Breakin’. “Breakin'” (1984) is an American breakdancing-themed musical film directed by Joel Silberg. The story centers on Kelly “Special K” Bennett, a young jazz dancer training under an instructor who disrespects breakdancing. She meets two street dancers, Ozone and Turbo, at Venice Beach, and after initially being dismissed by her instructor, she joins them to form a dance troupe.
The film showcases the vibrant culture of breakdancing and hip-hop, highlights the integration of street and classical dance styles, and features memorable dance battles and performances. Take a look at one of the first dance battles from the film here – can you spot any moves from our classes?
In the 21st century, Street Dance is now celebrated worldwide, with different cultures adding their own local spin on the classic set of moves. Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok have revolutionized how street dance is shared, learned, and popularized. Viral dance challenges and tutorials have expanded the dance community and rapid spread of new moves and styles.
Here are 5 ways how Street Dance benefits your overall Health:
- Improves Physical Agility
Due to the dynamic pace of movements, such as stepping, twisting, and body isolations. These steps require rapid reactions and adaptation, building your ability to move quickly and confidently. The repeated practice of coordinated steps trains your muscles for better endurance, allowing them to perform daily tasks with increased speed and ease.
2. Reduces the risk of falls
Street Dance creates a multi-sensory experience, responding to music and choreography in street dance means you use many senses – sight, hearing, spatial awareness- and motor skills to perform the routines. This “mind-motor” integration helps improve the body’s ability to react to unsteady surfaces or unexpected obstacles.
Research has shown that dance-based interventions can significantly improve both static and dynamic balance (measured by tools such as the Berg Balance Scale) and are associated with reduced rates of falls among older adults. Studies indicate fall reduction benefits of up to 31% among participants who engaged in structured dance activities, especially those emphasizing balance and mobility such as street dance.
3. Reduction of cortisol levels
Street dance is a moderate-intensity aerobic activity that elevates heart rate and stimulates the release of endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine. The combination of music, rhythm, and coordinated movement in street dance activates the parasympathetic nervous system—often called the body’s “chill switch.” This neurochemical response helps regulate the stress hormone cortisol by reducing its levels, promoting relaxation and mood improvement.
4. Enhanced Non-Verbal communication skills
Street dance teaches dancers to use their bodies expressively, conveying emotions, stories, and intentions through movement instead of words. Movement sequences in street dance function like sentences in a conversation—the order and flow convey meaning. Learning to sequence movements develops skills in organizing communication effectively even without words. This heightened awareness of body language helps dancers communicate more clearly nonverbally.
5. Improves Joint Mobility and Pain Management
Street dance involves rhythmic, flowing movements that encourage joints to move through their full range, such as bending, twisting, and stretching. These moves then engage the muscle around the joints building strength to reduce pain and stress on the joints. Street dance involves rhythmic, flowing movements that encourage joints to move through their full range.
Overall, Street Dance is the perfect form of dance to keep yourself happy, healthy, and active as you get older. As well as connecting with others through music and movement, your body also gets an excellent workout, which will benefit all your joints and aches and pains.
