5 Effective Benefits of the Paso Doble for your Physical and Mental Health

Paso Doble

It’s time to add some drama to our Keep Dancing classes with the Paso Doble 💃

The Paso Doble is a dramatic and theatrical dance inspired by Spanish bullfighting, with a deep history in Spain and France.

Paso Doble’s name means “double step” in Spanish, and it originated as a march used by the Spanish in the 18th century. The dance shows the drama of a bullfight, with the leader portraying a matador and the follower often representing the matador’s cape, the bull, or a flamenco dancer. Paso Doble music was used for the entrance of the matador in the bullfighting ring and was played as marches by military bands.

The dance first gained major popularity in France before spreading to other parts of Europe and eventually becoming a competitive Latin ballroom dance in the early 20th century.

Paso Doble has bold postures, sharp movements, and strong movements that reflect the tension and elegance of the bullfight, whereas the ballroom version of the Paso Doble emphasises the bullfight theatrically with the man portraying the matador and the woman portraying the cape.

Take a look at the recent Lewis Cope and Katya Jones’ Paso Doble on this season’s Strictly Come Dancing Lewis Cope & Katya Paso Doble to The Plaza of Execution from The Mask of Zorro ✨ BBC Strictly 2025. I am sure you can agree that it definitely deserved the first 10 of the series!

Here are 5 Benefits of the Paso Doble for your Physical and Mental Health

  1. Enhances Creativity

As the Paso Doble is a storytelling dance, when a dancer interprets the music and emotion of a ‘Bull-Fight’ through the choreography, it stimulates imaginative thinking. A dancer will follow steps but add their own personality, which enhances self-expression. Creative dance activates different parts of the brain, which helps to maintain cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and problem-solving in older adults.

2. Enhanced Coordination

Coordination is enhanced in the Paso Doble due to precise footwork, which involves sharp and rhythmic steps that need coordination between legs, feet, and the upper body to boost the Paso Doble flare. This encourages full-body coordination, which in turn improves overall spatial awareness. Learning and repeating the Paso Doble movement sequences stimulates the brain, particularly in areas involved in motor control and memory.

3. Muscle-Building

Lunges, Marches, Rotational Movement, and quick transitions in the Paso Doble engage all muscle groups whilst being grounded and strong. These movements engage the quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and glutes, helping to maintain leg strength and mobility.

4. Supports Neuromuscular Coordination

Neuromuscular coordination is the ability of the brain and muscles to work together smoothly and efficiently, involving Motor control (how well muscles respond to signals), timing and sequencing of movements, balance, and spatial awareness. Precise footwork, dramatic turns, and stylised poses have precise footwork that challenge the brain to send accurate signals to muscles, improving motor control. The Paso Doble often involves opposite arm and leg movements, which activate both hemispheres of the brain and improve coordination.

5. Dance and Music therapeutic intervention for people with Parkinson’s Disease

The Paso Doble method is a dance-based and music-driven therapeutic intervention specifically adapted for people with Parkinson’s disease. It was developed to support rhythmic movement and partner-based coordination to enhance mobility, balance, and emotional well-being in patients while also engaging caregivers. The Paso Doble method improves: gait and balance, muscle power and joint mobility, cognitive and emotional function, and social and caregiver connection.
