We have loved teaching you Greek Dancing in our May Keep Dancing classes! Have you felt these benefits…
Greek dancing has been around since 2000 BC and was an essential part of daily life in ancient Greece. Dances were often religious rituals in honour of gods such as Apollo (god of music, poetry, prophecy, healing, archery, the sun, and knowledge), Dionysus (god of wine, winemaking, fertility, vegetation, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre). and Artemis (goddess of hunting, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, virginity, and the protection of young children).
During ancient Greece, dance was also seen in theatre, military training and social events.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, well-known dances such as Kalamatianos, Syrtos, and Hasapiko became widely recognised as part of Greek folk culture.
Today, traditional dance remains a strong part of cultural life in Greece and among Greek communities worldwide. It is taught in cultural associations, performed at festivals, and used in social gatherings
In many Greek traditions, the circle group community symbolises:
- unity,
- continuity,
- shared history,
- and collective identity.
The absence of a beginning or end in the circle reflects the idea that the community moves together as one. Traditional dances such as Kalamatianos and Syrtos are well known for this communal structure.
Now we have learnt the history of Greek Dancing, here are 5 benefits to boost your physical and mental health
- Boosts social connection
As Greek dancing is often in a circle, the emphasis is on group participation rather than individual performance. Circles promote conversation, shared rhythm and group identity, which promotes a sense of community within the class.
2. Improves balance
Group formation of the circle in Greek dancing allows balance to be supported naturally. The visual guidance allows dancers to pick up on others’ rhythm, timing and placement, making it easier to anticipate steps and stay coordinated. In many traditional dances from Greece, participants lightly hold hands while dancing in a circle. This controls your balance, helping you to feel more secure and stable.
3. Improves Coordination and Timing
Greek Dancing is often danced to clear and emphasised rhythms which help dancers match movements to a predictable beat. Repeating steps in time with the music strengthens the connection between the brain and the body.
4. Boosts Mood
The strong beat in Greek music provides momentum and motivation. Melodies and repeated rhythms stimulate the parts of the brain associated with pleasure and reward, and the brain releases endorphins. Endorphins help reduce stress and discomfort while creating feelings of pleasure and emotional uplift.
5. Builds lower body strength
Repeated movements and shifting weight help build a strong lower body to support mobility and independence. These important muscles are activated during Greek Dancing: the quadriceps in the thighs, the hamstrings at the backs of the legs, the calf muscles, the hip stabilisers, and the gluteal muscles. As you keep practising, your lower body strength builds, enabling a stronger sense of physical stability day to day.
